Due to the failing infrastructure in Johannesburg, in both water and electricity, Hearts of Hope has had to step out in faith to purchase solar systems for our homes.
We have started a fundraising appeal to try and recover the costs that we have incurred for the project. And the project appeal on GlobalGiving is helping towards this.
With 52 children living at Hearts of Hope and the 17 housemothers that are looking after them, there is a lot of food that needs to be kept in fridges or freezers - and we need to ensure that the electricity feed stays constant so that we don't have food that goes off and then have to throw it all away.
When we get donations of vegetables and perishables, we often have 'cooking' days in the main kitchen where volunteers and staff come together to cut, chop, peel and cook. Stews, soups, and bags of vegetables are prepared and then frozen for use at a later stage. If we didn't have the electric freezers and fridges, the wastage would be huge and we would be unable to provide the nutritious and healthy food that the children need to thrive.
Thank-you for supporting this project to enable Hearts of Hope to go off grid.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
