This project will provide solar power to three of the homes at Hearts of Hope in Johannesburg enabling us to go off the electricity grid. This will save us money each month and provide regular and sustainable energy to orphaned and vulnerable children who live at the children's home.
South Africa is experiencing increasing electricity costs and intermittent supply of electricity, even in the urban areas of Johannesburg. Blackouts can leave the children and housemothers vulnerable. The cost to the organisation of basic electricity needs is becoming completely prohibitive. The monthly costs of electricity to all the houses is $2481. With feeding 52 children, we have 18 fridges and freezers to keep all the food and the potential of blackouts means that food could spoil.
To ensure that our children are safe and properly cared for, we have installed a solar energy system in all the houses. The solar system kicks in automatically when the electricity grid fails.
The solar panel system will provide Hearts of Hope with tremendous financial cost savings and the 52 children with a safe and bright home environment.
