HALO had a busy and tough year. Nonetheless we had a successful year, vaccinating 1671 dogs in 2021. We sterilised 232 dogs, a record number for us.
HALO conducted a mass steri day on 23 November, sterilising a total of 31 dogs. 31 Dogs now lead a happier and healthier life with no unwanted litters!
HALO receives an average of 2-3 emergency dogs a week. Last month of December we experienced a surge in parvo cases. Unfortunately, this horrible disease has a bad outlook for dogs and this month has been especially bad for HALO. We received 17 cases of Parvo and only one survived.
We received 8 dogs in just December with Tickbite Fever. All have survived and went home after a sterilisation and 28 days of antibiotic treatment.
We also received 3 dogs with broken legs. One dog, Polly, has undergone surgery and is currently recovering for 6 weeks at a fosterhome. The other two were unfortunately in too bad of a state and could not be helped.
HALO found a puppy wondering the roads and was able to rehome him. Also a litter of 6 unwanted puppies was handed over to HALO and we have to date been able to rehome five, the last one is still in fostercare.
In our region rabies is still a problem and this quarter was no exception. We unfortunately received a mother dog that was surrendered to us with 4 puppies. After 3 days in camp she presented with rabies and unfortunately had to be euthanised.
