Summary

HALO serves 12 rural communities around Hoedspruit, Limpopo, one of South Africa's poorest provinces. All these communities suffer from high unemployment rates and there are no veterinary facilities in any of the communities, so these thousands of dogs rely completely on HALO for (emergency) veterinary care. We have a dedicated dog ambulance to take in sick and injured dogs. From broken limbs, to tick bite fever, TVT (a common cancer in free roaming dogs); we give the dogs the care they need.

Challenge

The 12 rural communities around Hoedspruit where we work have no access to veterinary facilities and qualify as some of the poorest communities in the province Limpopo. At the same time these communities are surrounded by private game reserves. Risks of rabies, parvo and distemper not only affect dogs but also wildlife. The thousands of dogs in these communities have a rough life and are exposed to many health issues; from illnesses related to parasites, getting hit by a car or bite wounds.

Solution

Dogs in need of emergency veterinary care (from broken limbs, to cancer, or other critically ill dogs) are picked up by HALOs dog ambulance and receive the care they need. We have a dedicated vehicle driving 7 days a week to collect dogs or give mobile treatment to alleviate the suffering of dogs. With our ambulance we help thousands of dogs a year.

Long-Term Impact

By serving these communities with a dog ambulance we not only uplift the lives of dogs in the communities, but also help eradicate rabies, parvo and distemper: keeping not only dogs and wildlife safe, but also the people living in the communities as a One Health approach.
