Your support will help to provide the construction materials that volunteers will use to work side-by-side with future homeowners to build 30 new Habitat for Humanity homes in Portland and Gresham every year.
Many families and individuals in our community can't afford to pay for one of their most basic needs - a place to live. Low income families in Multnomah County average one move every 15 months because of rising rent. Schools in east Portland and Gresham have mobility rates as high as 60%, largely due to rising rent. Households devoting more than half their income to housing, have less for other needs: $123 less each month on food, $86 less on healthcare, and $20 less on clothing.
Habitat mobilizes over 7,500 volunteers annually to work side-by-side with the future homeowners to build simple, decent and energy efficient homes. Habitat will sell these homes with an affordable mortgage set at no more than 30% of their household's income to pre-selected families, helping them to permanently escape poverty housing.
Compared to renters of the same age, income, and race, homeowners are 12 times wealthier. Their children are 35% less likely to receive welfare, 20% more likely to graduate from high school, and 62% more likely to go to college
