Priya's Dreams Have Come True- Because of YOU

By Jyoti Nale-Tajane | Programme Director

Priya’s father died when she was just 11 and that is when her mother started working as a domestic worker. Priya had to leave her school at 5th Standard to take care of her younger siblings and eventually started working as replacement of her mother. Since she started working at very young age, she lost her childhood between the responsibilities. She never had a friend and has no memory of playing or spending quality time with friends in her in childhood.

Priya was 17 when her mother started falling ill frequently and so it was decided by her mother to get her married. Priya was not even 18 then but she was hopeful that probably this would give her opportunity to changing her life.

Her husband turned out to be alcoholic and unemployed. She faced the physical, sexual and emotional violence to keep her troubles away from her mother. One day her husband poured kerosene on her as his lunch was delayed. That was the point when she decided to leave him and go back to her mother.

Her mother was happy that she escaped the violence but was concerned of “burden” on family income so was exploring reconciliation with Son-In Law. Priya was not ready to risk her life again and approached Save The Children India for support.

She was provided with legal counselling, Skills Training to be Hygiene technician and Life-skills. Today Priya works with a leading International bank as hygiene technician in facility management department and earns salary of Rs. 15,000 per month. She is inclined to appear for 10th standard board exam and get back to education. Priya is now also a mentor to 10 other young women with some history of violence and motivating them to give their dreams a second chance.

We are thankful to supporters like you who trusted us to invest in dreams of Priya and many like her. The impact has been life changing, meaningful and fulfilling.

Thank you
