This Christmas Help Women Break Cycle of Poverty
By Jyoti Nale | Programme Director

Unemployment in the 15-29yrs age group is currently at 27.2% for urban women in India.
The lack of high quality, relevant training institutions and regressive social norms make it harder for women from vulnerable communities to gain financial independence and security. At Save The Children India, we believe in equal rights for women and strive to empower them to contribute and gain from the country’s growing economy.
Our Interventions aim at preventing violence against vulnerable women by empowering them through skill-based programs at community-based centres. It is an opportunity that helps them break the cycle of poverty and discrimination. The program includes employability skills training, linking them to jobs and other income generating options like enterprise development, which in turn leads to financial independence and greater control over their own lives.
This quarter we were successful in providing skills training to 240 young women in various marketable trades such as retail, Sales and Marketing, Nursing, Beauty and wellness etc. This opportunity has helped them to take employment and work towards breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
This Christmas, help us reach more women with continuing supporting us.
Thank you

Empowerment is much more than recieving pay cheque

Dear friends of Save The Children India
It's a great pleasure to make this report for the quarter. This quarter has been unique in many way. In this quarter we conducted series of trainings for young woman from vulnareble communities. Apart from providing them with employbility skills training and enterprises development support. We invested great amount of efforts to impart essential life skills using Art Based Therapies.
One of the session was an eye opener for many. Economic empowerment is always restricted to ability to earn however the session brought out the fact it's actually an ability to be able deside where and to spend and to own properties purchased out of it. In India it's is uncommon for women to own properties easily even after they have spent entire life to earn it and this is prevailing across all classes of society.
Realising this the group of young women was able to relate to it and recognised it as one if the factor that increases vulnarebility to violance.
We hope to continue such intensive sessions that makes them realise realities better and work towards preventing it in their lives.
Thank you for your love and support to to the cause.

Meena was going through a difficult time in her life. A person she married against her parents wish turned out to be a drug trafficker and was arrested by police after few months of getting married. Six months pregnant then, she had no means to support herself and her child she was unable to work and survived only on food provided by neighbours in slums of Malad area of Mumbai. When team of Save The Children India met her child was 6 months old and Meena was doing odd jobs of swiping streets of city under a private contractor. Meena has passed her 10th standard but could not think of making use of the asset she had of education. She was trained by Save The Children India in the sector of Retails Skills and immediately found a job as Retail trainee associate in one of the renowned chain of garment store. She now earns Rs. 14,000 a month. She is now able to afford a day care for her child and very happy working and earning for herself and for her child. She never thought that her life can change miraculously in just six months
When we asked her last week that what made the difference, she mentioned " I had forgotten to dream for myself, which I have started doing now". She recently brought a smart phone and with big smile on her face she shared that her brother has sent a friend request to connect on face book.
Save The Children India works with over 1000 young women like Meena who stay in vulnerable conditions and prone to violence and help them dream a better and brighter future from themselves.
More than providing them with skills training and job-placement, we find value in helping them dream a future for themselves. These dreams need your support and appreciation to those who believed in their dreams.
Save The Children India thank each one of you for your support.
