Promoting Girls' Leadership, Values & Citizenship

By Imelda Durand | Translation & Editing Coordinator

This year, we once again organized our Holiday Activities on Values and Citizenship, creating a supportive and empowering environment where children, especially girls could learn, grow, and develop leadership skills through joyful and meaningful experiences.

In many rural communities in Senegal, school holidays are often spent on agricultural work or economic responsibilities, limiting opportunities for personal development. Thanks to generous support, we were able to offer a safe and inclusive space where children could fully enjoy their vacation while engaging in learning centered on friendship, citizenship, solidarity, and moral values. These activities placed special emphasis on encouraging girls to express themselves, take initiative, and build confidence as future leaders in their communities.

This year, we reinforced the program in enlightening our educational guide and providing additional training to youth facilitators. This ensured that activities were of high quality, culturally relevant, and intentionally designed to foster leadership, teamwork, and civic responsibility, particularly among girls and young women.

The program of 2025 reached a greater number of children and youth across four villages: Némataba, Kandia, Saré Coly Sallé, and Vélingara. Girls actively participated in group discussions, role-playing, and community-based activities that helped them develop communication skills, self-esteem, and a sense of responsibility toward their communities.

We are pleased to share the positive outcomes of this initiative, along with photographs that capture the joy, engagement, and impact made possible thanks to our generous donors. We are grateful to them for being an essential part of the Grandmother Project family. Together, we not only transforming individual lives but also strengthening communities by nurturing the next generation of girls as confident, compassionate leaders.

Happy New Year to everyone! Best wishes for 2026
