Empowering Young Girls to Become Leaders in Their

By Imelda Durand | Translation & Editing Coordinator

The Holistic Development of Girls (HDG) program, implemented by Grandmother Project – Change through Culture in southern Senegal, demonstrates that young girls become stronger leaders when they are supported by women across generations — especially mothers and grandmothers.

The program was created to address early pregnancy, early marriage, and barriers to girls’ education. Unlike many traditional programs that focus only on girls, the HDG approach involves girls, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, and community leaders in open dialogue and collective action.

Key Lessons on Building Girls’ LeadershipI. Strengthen Girls’ Confidence and Voice

Girls who participated in the program gained:

  • Greater self-confidence
  • The ability to refuse pressure from boys
  • Better understanding of their rights and future opportunities
  • Increased motivation to stay in school

Girls also became more active in discussions about their lives and future, helping them grow into confident young leaders.

II. Use Grandmothers as Mentors and Community Leaders

The study found that grandmothers are trusted and influential figures within families. After receiving training and support, they:

  • Educated girls about adolescence and sexuality
  • Encouraged girls to continue their education
  • Promoted respectful behavior and positive cultural values
  • Protected girls from early marriage and pregnancy
  • Became advocates for girls throughout the community

Grandmothers proved to be powerful role models who strengthened girls’ resilience and leadership potential.

III. Promote Communication Across Generations

Before the program, relationships between girls, mothers, and grandmothers were often marked by fear, silence, and mistrust. Through intergenerational dialogue activities:

  • Families began discussing sensitive issues openly
  • Mothers adopted more supportive parenting approaches
  • Girls felt safer asking questions and seeking guidance
  • Women from different generations worked together to support girls

This stronger communication created a protective and empowering environment for girls.

IV. Build Collective Community Support

The program encouraged communities to see girls’ development as a shared responsibility. Women formed “coalitions” to:

  • Guide and mentor girls
  • Prevent early pregnancy
  • Encourage school success
  • Reinforce positive social values

As communities became more united, girls received stronger emotional and social support to pursue their goals. In conclusion the experience of the HDG program in Senegal shows that empowering girls is most effective when entire families and communities work together. By valuing the knowledge and leadership of grandmothers and strengthening relationships among generations, communities can help girls become confident, educated, and respected leaders for the future.
