A Soldier's Wife's Story of Understanding

By Nadiya | Psychologist

Yuliia is 44 years old, and her husband has been serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a long time (name changed for confidentiality). Since her husband was mobilized, she noticed that he had changed — he became withdrawn, irritable, and emotionally distant. Messages and phone calls no longer brought the warmth they once did: frequent misunderstandings, and a growing feeling that she no longer understood the person closest to her. Alongside her constant anxiety for his safety came an oppressive sense of loneliness within her own marriage. This also affected her work — her productivity declined, conflicts with colleagues appeared, and her confidence in herself began to waver.

Yuliia reached out to our Center, and our psychologists began individual work with her. We explained what her husband was actually going through — the psychological changes that servicemembers typically experience after combat, and why these changes are not about how he feels toward her personally. Alongside this, we worked on her own emotional state: self-regulation techniques, constructive communication, exercises to reduce anxiety, and restoring her inner sense of stability.

The results came quickly. Yuliia learned to recognize when her husband’s behavior was a consequence of what he had lived through, rather than a cooling of their relationship, and she began to approach their dialogue differently. Her anxiety decreased significantly, and their family relationship became warmer and more trusting. Her professional life changed as well — her confidence returned, and conflicts with colleagues nearly disappeared.

According to Yuliia, she finally feels inner calm and a sense of control over her own life — even though the war continues and her husband remains in service.

Your donations help us support not only children, but also the wives, mothers, and families of servicemembers — those who hold the home front every day and need support no less than those on the front line.

Thank you for standing with us in this work.
