The Strength of a Tiny Heart: 490 Grams of Hope

By Your Support | Charity found

At the Kyiv Regional Perinatal Center, a true miracle happened – a baby girl was born weighing only 490 grams.

She was born at just 24 weeks of pregnancy – extremely premature, with a critically low weight, when the chances of survival are almost negligible. Yet despite all the difficulties, this tiny girl survived. She was saved by the coordinated work of the doctors, the modern equipment provided to the hospital by the Charity found Your Support, and the immense love with which the team fought for every single breath she took.

Specialists explain that such cases are becoming increasingly common due to the ongoing war in the country. Women are forced to live under constant alarms, relocations, and losses, which lead to chronic stress. Because of this, they are unable to undergo timely diagnostics or receive proper medical support. All of this significantly increases the risk of premature births and complications. The perinatal center emphasizes that it is precisely thanks to the modern equipment from Charity found Your Support that the neonatal intensive care unit now has the capacity to save the lives of the smallest patients in critical situations.

The birth itself was an emergency: the mother was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The medical team immediately decided to perform a cesarean section, and in the silence of the operating room came the first, weak, but so longed-for breath of the newborn. It was a moment everyone present will never forget.

From her very first minutes, every day of Nadia’s* life turned into a battle. The doctors said they counted every gram of weight, every milliliter of milk, because for her, each was a victory. Her lungs were still immature, her organs continued to develop, but she fought with incredible strength. And the medical team fought alongside her, sustaining the baby’s life in the intensive care unit for nearly two months.

By Nadia’s side at all times were neonatologists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists — those who helped her take the smallest steps toward a big life. There is still a long road ahead, and over the next three years she will remain under close supervision by specialists.

For the center’s team, this story has become a symbol of faith and hope. Carrying and delivering a child weighing only 490 grams is a challenge, but giving her the chance at childhood is a true mission they are proud of.

Today, Nadia shows good health indicators. She is active, smiling, and brings her family the happiness for which months of struggle were endured – the joy of seeing her live.
