Shortly before Christmas, a fire made the refugee shelter in Lipa, Bosnia-Herzegovina, uninhabitable. Now hundreds of people in the north of the country are trying to survive in the snow and cold in the forest. They are persevering in improvised shelters in sub-zero temperatures.
"The medical care of the people is a disaster," says a member organisation of the alliance Aktion Deutschland Hilft. Many refugees suffer from respiratory diseases and hypothermia, and many are in a mentally desolate condition."We have to help these people at the external border of the EU quickly, because the winter is currently freezing. They are in urgent need of our help!“ The member of the alliance continues. Several alliance organizations of Aktion Deutschland Hilft are now providing winter aid to the people around Camp Lipa: one member is financing medical consumables with which paramedics can care for the people. Others started their joint emergency aid with local partners in January and distributed warm and rainproof boots, sleeping bags, hygiene kits and ointments against skin diseases on site.
"We are doing everything we can to fulfill our humanitarian mission. We can't leave the refugees alone now," warns a member organisation of the alliance, who has been familiar with the region for 25 years.
