Dear Ms. Polydor,
As I mentioned to you on the phone, ultrasound examination of Amos' lungs revealed a mild improvement on the left side, but the right lung seems to be forming an abscess that will likely need to be removed through thoracotomy (incision into the chest through his side) in the future. We have discontinued his nebulized antimicrobials and are planing on switching him to oral medications only. This way he may be able to go home within a week, provided he stays stable. From that point on, he would have to come back for recheck examinations.
Amos is still very stable. Still on the antimicrobials metronidazole (oral), rifampim (oral), enrofloxacin (IV) and ceftiofur (nebulized). We will repeat thoracic radiographs.
Your bill right now is at $6000 and he will definitely need a few more months of antimicrobial therapy and possibly surgical intervention through his chest wall to manage the abscess more efficiently. Again, in the long run you will be spending $10,000 total and possibly more. It is very likely that you will end up spending $15,000 until his pneumonia is completely resolved.
Best regards,
Tiago Afonso, DVM
