533 farming families in Lira and Kole, Uganda need your help to grow trees to protect and revitalize their fields so they can begin to transform their lands into lush, sustainable productive Forest Gardens. Your support will give families the tools and planting materials to grow trees, vegetables, and crops to create a sustainable source of income and feed themselves nutritiously
Between 2002 & 2007, families in Uganda were terrorized by Joseph Kony & his Lord's Resistance Army who killed thousands of people & forced many children to fight for them. Families fled to refugee camps & when they returned they faced the long process of rebuilding their lives. But destructive farming practices have trapped them in the cycle of poverty that is very difficult to escape. Families are looking for a solution that will allow them to sustainably increase their production & income.
This Forest Garden Project offers a new life for these 533 families in Lira & Kole. With your help, our approach will empower them to transform their lands into multi-layered agricultural systems that combine diverse varieties of crops & trees. Your support will help them plant protective trees, fodder trees, fruit trees, & vegetable crops in their Forest Gardens to provide an increased income (up to 500%), nutritious fruits & vegetables, livestock fodder, fuelwood & other garden products.
Once their Forest Gardens are established, over 3,941 people will benefit directly from the permanent increase in land productivity. This project will help them to break the cycles of poverty, hunger, & natural resource degradation that limit their economic opportunities. The sustainable Forest Garden provides: 1) income from locally-marketable products 2) nutritious, diverse foods for consumption and 3) better soil, land & water quality for families now & for generations to come.
