Project Report: Protecting Deaf Girls from Harassment
At the Deaf Welfare Awareness Foundation (DWAF), we have witnessed a deeply concerning reality—deaf girls are among the most vulnerable to harassment, often unable to report or even fully understand their rights due to communication barriers. This silence makes them easy targets, and addressing this issue has become a critical part of our mission.
Over the past months, DWAF has taken proactive steps to raise awareness and protect deaf girls through targeted sessions conducted during our community outreach activities. Whether during flood relief visits, Ramadan distributions, Eid initiatives, or other community events, we have consistently integrated harassment protection and rights awareness sessions into our programs.
In cities including Mardan, Multan, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, our team has directly engaged with deaf girls and their families. These sessions are designed in accessible formats, ensuring that participants clearly understand personal safety, boundaries, and how to seek help. For many, this is the first time they are learning about their rights in a way they can fully comprehend.
One of the most powerful moments during these sessions is when participants begin to share their experiences—often for the first time. Through guided discussions and trust-building, we create safe spaces where deaf girls feel heard, respected, and supported. This not only raises awareness but also strengthens their confidence to protect themselves and speak up.
Our approach goes beyond awareness. We also engage parents and community members, emphasizing their role in safeguarding deaf girls and creating protective environments. By involving the wider community, we aim to shift mindsets and build a culture where harassment is recognized, reported, and prevented.
While these efforts have already made a meaningful difference, the need remains vast. Many regions still lack access to such critical awareness, leaving deaf girls at continued risk. DWAF intends to expand the scope of this initiative, reaching more cities and rural areas, and developing structured programs that can provide ongoing education and support.
However, our ability to scale this work is currently limited by available resources. With greater support, we can conduct more sessions, train facilitators, and extend our reach to ensure that no deaf girl is left unaware or unprotected.
At DWAF, we believe that every deaf girl deserves to live with dignity, safety, and confidence. Through continued awareness, education, and community engagement, we are working to break the silence and build a future where deaf girls are empowered to protect themselves and claim their rights.
We are deeply grateful to our supporters who stand with us in this important mission. Together, we are not only raising awareness—we are creating safer communities and transforming lives.
