Greetings from Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI)!

This quarter we bring to you a report of our advoacy efforts made with one of the ace central government medical college Dr. R.M.L. Hospital and PGIMER, New Delhi on 4th May 2017.

Dr.Ajay Khera Deputy commissioner of child health and immunisation, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was also present to adress the participants. He is one of the key bureaucrat from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare , Government of India.

BPNI's Central Coordinator Dr.Arun Gupta participated as an expert in the consultation. The theme of the consultation was "Quality improvement initiative on early initiation of breastfeeding among Caesarean born babies". The conference was organized by Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Anesthesia and Neonatology.

The key objective of the consultation was:

To Sensitize about issues related to breastfeeding among caesarean deliveries.
To develop an action plan for a quality improvement model to achieve skin to skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding among caesarean deliveries.
Urge MOH for inclusive policy on these issues with an aim to favorably impact overall breast feeding rates in our country.

Dr Arun Gupta, delivered a short talk highlighting importance of early initiation of breastfeeding in newborns especially in caesarean born babies as this mode constitutes about one third of all deliveries. Also that although now 80% of deliveries are institutional, these overall low rates of early initiation and exclusive breast feeding rates among Indian mothers can be impacted favourably if a directed effort as one in this meeting can be achieved. He also outlined steps to be taken especially during antenatal period to make this possible.

It was unanimously agreed upon that:

Skin to skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding are powerful interventions for improving overall neonatal outcomes.
Currently these indicators are low especially among Caesarean deliveries and that achieving skin to skin and early initiation of breastfeeding in all deliveries including in the OTs is important and feasible.
The minutes of this meeting and key recommendations should be presented (after consensus from the key stakeholders who participated in the meeting) to the MOH to consider an inclusive policy to be framed in this regard.

With this advocacy effort BPNI was able to develop relationships with the key personnels fom the medical college and bureaucrats of Government of India . We plan to pitch IYCF counselling specilatist and middle level trainings at New Delhi State Level with them in future fulfilling our objective of creating breastfeeding counselors in India.

Greetings rom Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India(BPNI)!

This quarter we bring to you field level report from Delhi, India . As part of this project BPNI has done several advocacy meetings in the past in states like Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. BPNI's advocacy could convince the state governments to build their capcity by training their human resource as national trainers on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF)skilled counseling. Training is one of BPNI's forte over the years, till date BPNI's has trained more than 45000 health care professionals and workers in India.

In this report we would like to share insights from our ongoing training of trainers in Delhi,India at University College of Medical Sciences & GTB Hospital,Goverment of India. This national training is organised by BPNI for creating 5 national trainers from 4 different states in India. The states which are here to build their capacity include Jharkhand(2), Uttar Pradesh(1), Maharashtra(1)and Delhi(1). These 5 goverment and private officials will be trained as national trainers over 14 days of training in which they will get training for 7 days and then they will train a team of 19 IYCF counseling specialist for next 7 days. This will help them exercise their skills learnt over 7 days of extensive training.

Post the training they will help their respective states to conduct further state level capacity building training on IYCF counseling. These trainers will reach out to middle level trainers and field level health workers in their respective states helping us creating many more breastfeeding counselors.

The training has started from 8th November 2016 and will be completed on 21 November 2016. We wish to conduct many more training of training in more states or a holistic coverage. ( This training has been a collaborative effort of BPNI, Department of Peadiatrics ,UCMS, GTB Hospital,IBFAN and SIDA along with limitted global giving funds)
