Dear friends ,
We have survived a year with COVID 19 pandemic. The virus continues to devastate the global economy and life seems so unpredictable and future seems uncertain for all us. We don’t know what is in store for each of us, but as far as possible we are trying to provide help and support to the marginalised communities to kick-start economic activity.
Redefining the day to day operations.
Our skill development programs enabled many uneducated women to earn a decent living in the past. But now they are facing extraordinary challenges to find market for their acquired skills. The domain needs new interventions, new plans focussed on online models, but it is not easy like other sectors for our NGO as our beneficiaries are mostly uneducated and techno based marketing demands different capabilities.
And the key question is – how do we do it? Though in the initial lock down months we have provided food supplies to affected families it is not a long term solution. The virus afflicted restrictions continues endlessly .Now we have to teach them to fish in this muddy water of chaos and confusion.
We are continuously in search for new domains and skills which are in high demand for the current scenario and at the same time we encourage our beneficiaries to use the skills they have already learned to run businesses from home. Our Enterprise Development Program ( EDP) training modules are running online with all the information needed to set up the business and run it effectively during the lock down.
We bear the basic set up costs for starting up their home based businesses. We help them by doing digital marketing of their products through social media.
Running the business from home is not that easy for many as they also have to manage domestic responsibilities. We continue to run self-motivational programs too for our beneficiaries taking into account of their mental health.
Success Stories from IDEA’s Home Chef Course –
For Deepa, it was a new beginning ,a dream come true, to be able to complete Home chef course under IDEA’s skill development program for women. As she lost her mother in an early age, she took the responsibly of cooking for the family and thus she had developed an interest in cooking. But she could not join a hotel management course as she did not have the financial support.
When heard of IDEA Home Chef course she joined it and completed it successfully. She says the EDP program covered all the necessary topics she needed to know and boosted her confidence to start her own venture.
She learnt variety of Indian dishes during the course. In her own words, “EDP training was the best thing in the course where I learned things like, importance of marketing, finance management, customer care and many more with the activities everything was explained very well”. She was all ready to chase her aspirations to be a chef, which was her dream as a child.
Then this unexpected pandemic was really a great challenge for her. But IDEA supported her to start her own business from home. She is working towards her goal of setting up a café. IDEA provided her Food license and supported her with information related to bank loans. Her family & well-wishers are also supporting her.
There are many other women like Deepa who are getting support from IDEA to begin/sustain their businesses during this pandemic.
Manju is another woman who completed IDEA Home chef course and started a snacks centre in Pune. She attended our EDP programs and participated in our online exhibitions which helped her to gain confidence in her abilities. She also got her food licence and branding with IDEA’s support. IDEA supported her financially to start her own business too. So she could invest Rs.40,000 for setting up her centre and in the first month itself she earned Rs.12,000. With the help of IDEA’s digital marketing, she received an order for Rs.15,000. It is really amazing to see that even in this difficult times our students are able to earn and support their families.
There are many such women who are waiting for your support . Request you to support them for reviving or starting their small business.
