Help Construct a Vocational Building in Kibera

Construction of the vocational school commenced in April 2024.The Vocational school will be a two storey building with a capacity to hold 150 people at a time. Skills such as plumbing, electrical maintenance, fashion & design, entreprenurship will be offered at the School. The school will also provide a community meeting space and a community library which will be open to all school going children within Kibera. Therefore, the vocational school will be a key promoter of education to underserved children and youths in Kibera. 

To date, construction is at the ground floor level where the walling works are at 80% completion. The success of this construction has been due to the generous donations from well-wishers, strategic partnerships with local youths who have been providing  labour and the positive engagement with the local authorities. This has created a great sense of community engagement and ownership. It is expected that construction works will be completed by July 2025 and the building will be ready for use.

Currently, construction is on a break as fundraising efforts continue. There is still a great need for funding in order to complete the project within the projected timeline. The total project budget is $100,000. Thanks to your generous support, $29,600 has been raised. There is still a funding need of $70,400 which is required in order to make the project a reality.

Project Title: Help construct a vocational building in Kibera

The Centre of Love proposed to construct a vocational building in Kibera. This will be a two-storey building where vocational skills in plumbing, fashion & design, hair and beauty will be taught. The building will also have dedicated space for a community library that will be open to residents of Kibera and especially primary and secondary school-going children.

Construction Phase 1 – Substructure Works

Construction of the first phase commenced in April 2024.The demolition of old iron sheet structures commenced in April 2024 and this created space for the proposed 2 storey building. Foundation works commenced and by May 2024 concrete casting for the ground floor was completed.

Construction Phase 2– Superstructure Works

Superstructure works-specifically wall and columns works commenced in August 2024. So far, the walls and columns are up to 50% completion level. The positive progress of the superstructure works has reignited a lot of enthusiasm among youths in Kibera as they can now start visualizing a space where they will learn skills that will ultimately result in employment and improved livelihoods. The entire construction utilizes services from community members who are skilled in construction and unskilled youths for manual jobs. This has led to more community awareness and ownership of the project.
