Sarita, a brave girl from one of the coastal villages in Andhra Pradesh, always dreamed of a carefree childhood filled with education. She was studying in class 10 at a local high school when her parents decided to marry her off to get rid of financial hardships. With no means to continue her studies, Sarita was forced to drop out and support her family’s livelihood by making garlands of basil leaves.
During field visits, CRY UK’s project team learned about Sarita’s situation and immediately intervened. The staff along with school authorities counseled her parents for weeks to highlight the consequences of child marriage and the lifelong benefits of education. Their persistent efforts convinced her parents to cancel the marriage and allow Sarita to return to school.
Now back in class 10, the 15-year-old girl is determined to complete her education and pursue higher studies. Her courage supported by CRY’s intervention has given her a second chance, inspiring other young girls in her community to fight for their right to learn.
