Kaung Hote village is in its fifth year of partnership with the Shanta Foundation. For one of its last infrastructure projects, the Village Development Team has identified new teacher housing as a priority. We need teachers to live in the villages in order to maintain a regular schedule for the children to attend school. This is a common priority for many of our village partnerships.
Our partner villages are located in very rural areas where roads are dirt and unmaintained. Travel during the rainy season is difficult to impossible. Most students live in or very close to the village center, but teachers often commute from larger towns. Transportation is typically on motorbikes, but when the roads are drenched, they are impassable. Teachers desperately want to do their job in these rural villages and would happily stay during the school week if they had appropriate housing.
The entire village will contribute cash and labor to complete infrastructure projects. Shanta then matches and supplements this to see the project through to completion. A project committee made up of villagers will oversee the construction as well as manage upkeep and oversee maintenance into the future. This method ensures that the project is holistic and considers all parts of their life. The villagers address these factors before the project begins, ensuring its success.
Education is imperative to eliminating poverty. Both male and female students need a consistent, qualified teacher to support them through their informative years of school. Some will continue with higher education, some will remain in their village and become leaders, teachers, and advocates. Help us help them.
