Researchers and educators alike affirm that the gift of music education is one of the best investments parents can make for their children. Learning to play an instrument develops listening, hand-eye, and fine motor skills as well as improving a child’s attention span, focus, and self- discipline. Children who make music in a group learn as much about teamwork as those who play sports, and engagement in musical activities offers a child the personal rewards of self-confidence, self-expression, and self-esteem. For the 23 % of Costa Rican families who live in poverty, however, the ability to offer this important gift to their children is an extremely challenging, if not impossible task.
Because the Costa Rican government and the Ministry of Culture and Youth understood the need and the issues, in 2007 they created the National System of Musical Education or SiNEM as it is known. And now for almost two decades SiNEM has been giving children living in poverty and at social risk, access to the joys and benefits of music through music language classes, instruments, ensembles, and workshops at 21 locations throughout Costa Rica.
The SiNEM location in San Ramon has an extensive and varied program of offerings and an enthusiastic and engaged student body. Though the school is funded by the government, additional financial help is always needed. CAA has been able to provide financial support for routine aspects of their programs like transportation associated with serving the needs of students in outlying schools as well as things that might be considered “extras” like a reception for the performers after their end-of-the-year concert. In addition, individual members of CAA have helped by donating instruments or returning from the States with high-quality supplies for string or wind instruments which are more difficult to obtain in Costa Rica.
CAA has both professional and amateur musicians as members as well as those who just love music so we are excited and grateful to be able to participate in the good work that SiNEM is doing in San Ramon for our youth and our community, and we offer our sincere thanks to those members and friends whose generosity has made our participation possible.
