The stark reality of poverty significantly impacts the lives of many families in San Ramon Costa Rica. While every family member is affected, it can be especially difficult for children who deserve to have a childhood free from worry and care. The Community Action Alliance of Costa Rica (CAA) in San Ramon, is a group of expats and Costa Ricans who are actively working to create some bright spots in the lives of those children whose world is impacted by poverty.
For the impoverished mother whose house has a dirt floor and no running water providing a healthy start for her newborn is a challenge. For an orphaned or abandoned child who lives at the local orphanage, feeling special on their birthday isn't always a given. And for the child whose family is struggling just to buy food, a Christmas gift is a luxury beyond hope. Children have the need and the right to be cared for and made to feel special to help them grow into emotionally-secure adults.
Each month we create and deliver to the local hospital 20 newborn welcome bundles consisting of a changing mat, a blanket, burping cloths, rubber pants, diapers, and a toy -- all for newborn care. Also with our donations, each of the 20 children at the city's orphanage gets a personalized birthday gift and a traditional cake and ice cream party. And finally, we provide the funds for Christmas gifts to be delivered to families in need so their children will have a Christmas worth remembering.
The majority of the CAA membership are expats, either full-time or part-time residents of Costa Rica. We have come to know and love our Costa Rican neighbors and their children. While we cannot totally erase the effects of poverty on these children's young lives, what we can do is offer them a chance to feel special and cared for by those in the world around them. We would love your help to make this happen -- one newborn, one orphan, one child at a time.
