The Rotary Club of Ballymena aims to raise funds to support the international Rotary Foundation initiatives. The Foundation aims to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through strengthening global partnerships and provide sustainable and measurable benefits to communities across the world, thereby making lives better.
There is an urgent need to improve health, provide quality education, improve the environment and alleviate poverty. This requires the encouragement of conversations which will foster understanding within and across various cultures. Problem areas which need to be addressed include literacy , disease prevention, maternal and child health, conflict resolution as well as water, sanitation and hygiene issues.
The programmes to be supported will include helping to rebuild homes after hurricanes, provision of innovative solutions such as solar lighting in remote off-grid areas, and medical care by placing volunteer doctors in locations to help refugees. The aim is to provide very practical help by ensuring that assistance is directed in a way which addresses core problem areas.
Potential long term impacts include helping communities to build up expertise and skills in areas such as provision of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. The further development of PolioPlus is intended to eradicate polio around the world. Greater access to free health care will be available to the poorest regions for generations to come. The Rotary Foundation aims to use its resources and influence to help support peace building opportunities across the world.
