With this project, CODESPA is empowering Amazonian communities in northern Peru to transform discarded bananas into value-added products-nutritious flakes and sustainable biotextiles-through community-led enterprises that strengthen local economies, create dignified jobs for women and youth, reduce waste, and promote a circular economy that restores both livelihoods and the environment.
In Peru's northern Amazon, 98% of Indigenous families in Condorcanqui live in poverty. Bananas are their main source of income, but poor roads, few buyers, and low prices keep them trapped. Nearly half of each harvest goes to waste because fruit can't reach markets or meet standards. This ongoing cycle deepens poverty, fuels deforestation, and threatens both families and the forests they depend on.
CODESPA helps families in Peru's Amazon region turn discarded bananas into opportunities. Through hands-on training and mentoring, local women and youth learn to make nutritious banana flakes and eco-friendly textiles from banana fiber. These new skills create income, reduce waste, and strengthen community leadership and environmental care across their ancestral lands.
In the long term, this project will help Amazonian families earn a steady income while protecting their forests. By turning waste bananas into new products, they'll reduce poverty, create jobs for women and youth, and make better use of natural resources.
