Help Amazonians Turn Bananas into Jobs

Thanks to your support, the NUGKUI enterprise in the Peruvian Amazon has reached an exciting milestone. What began as an innovative way to transform discarded bananas into a valuable product is now generating income for Indigenous farming families and proving that sustainable businesses can thrive in remote communities.

Over the past several months, the young leaders behind NUGKUI have focused not only on producing high-quality dehydrated banana flakes but also on strengthening the business itself. Together, they have refined their business model, updated production costs, and continue to manage the enterprise's day-to-day operations. Eleven young leaders have also strengthened their business management skills, building the knowledge needed to guide NUGKUI's continued growth.

These efforts are already producing results. During its first year of commercial operations, NUGKUI generated S/. 9,686 in sales while continuing to supply a commercial buyer with dehydrated banana flakes. Every sale represents more than revenue—it demonstrates that bananas once left to spoil can become a reliable source of income for Indigenous families while reducing agricultural waste in the Amazon.

While these early achievements are encouraging, demand for NUGKUI's products continues to grow. With your continued support, the enterprise can increase production, equip more Indigenous youth with the skills to lead the business, and create new economic opportunities for farming families across the region.
