This project will support 11 village-based Early Childhood Centres in rural Kajiado, Kenya, providing daily meals, safe classrooms, and early learning support to 600 young children who are unable to walk the 4-6 miles (6-10 kilometers) to the nearest school.
Over 100,000 children (ages 3-6) in Kajiado's pastoralist communities face an impossible barrier: school is an unsafe 4-6 mile (6-10 km) walk. This forces toddlers to stay home for years, entering school late and behind. Crucially, older sisters are kept home as caregivers, widening gender gaps. Missing this vital early learning ensures these children will struggle to ever catch up, drastically widening the gap against global peers into the future.
We strengthen 11 village Early Childhood Centres, giving children a safe space close to home to master essential early literacy, numeracy, social, and motor skills. Trained caregivers provide daily porridge and play-based learning, ensuring children are ready for school. This support also eases family childcare burdens, letting older siblings-especially girls-stay in school. Investing in early education strengthens families and communities.
Children who start school on time are more likely to succeed: they read at grade level, stay enrolled, and finish their education. Early learning boosts their confidence, social skills, and lifelong earning potential. Families benefit from reduced childcare burdens, ensuring girls can stay in school. Over time, communities see higher literacy, greater gender equity, and stronger pathways out of poverty.
