UA Brokers Without Borders continues to work on safe shelters in educational institutions in Mykolaiv. The project covers two institutions: Kindergarten No. 148 and Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 28. Both need additional protected spaces so that children can attend in-person classes and stay safe during air raid alerts.
At the preparatory stage, our team developed detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for both institutions. This allowed us to define the technical solutions, scope of works, and specific needs for each shelter. We also completed the tender procedures and selected contractors to carry out the construction works.
During this reporting period, the main progress was made at the kindergarten. The shelter renovation is now around 80% complete. The internal renovation works have been finished, and the space is ready for the next stage: installing lighting, ventilation, heating devices, and other technical systems needed for the shelter to function properly during long air raid alerts.
There has also been progress with the lyceum shelter. We have now secured the funding needed to move forward with the construction works. The tender procedure has already been completed, and the selected contractor is expected to start work soon.
An important contribution to closing the funding gap came from an initiative in Switzerland. Liliya Corpataux (Matsuk), a Ukrainian who works with the charitable organization Ukrainer in Bern, told her husband, Frédéric Corpataux, about our project and the needs of educational institutions in Mykolaiv. Frédéric was already well aware of the situation in Ukraine, so this project felt close and meaningful to him. It was Liliya who helped connect him with the UA Brokers Without Borders team. Frédéric then decided to support the fundraising campaign through his own initiative: he cycled more than 1,000 kilometers across several European countries to Ukraine to draw attention to the need for shelter renovations. More than 50 people joined the campaign, and together they raised over $7,000.
The renovation works are now either completed, in progress, or ready to begin. The remaining need is to equip the shelters after the repairs are finished. This includes furniture, toys, learning and play materials, seating and rest areas, drinking water, and other basic items that will make the shelters suitable for children’s daily use.
We are grateful to the GlobalGiving community and to everyone who continues to support this project.
