A young man, aged 24-27 years, impregnated a girl when she was 15 years old and subsequently neglected both her and the child. The girl's parents had to support her throughout her pregnancy and delivery, and they continue to care for both the girl and her child, who is now about 10 months old. The young man has not provided any financial support during the pregnancy, delivery, or after the child's birth.
A few weeks ago, the young man encountered the girl and harassed her, accusing her of giving birth and running away with the child. Upon hearing about this incident, we intervened, as Section 31 of the Nigeria Child Rights Act 2003 prohibits any form of sexual intercourse with a minor. We ensured that the young man was arrested, and justice was served.
Our intervention highlights the importance of community awareness and action in addressing child abuse and neglect. By educating teachers, social workers, parents, and community members about the signs of abuse and the appropriate responses, we can prevent such incidents and provide necessary support to affected children and families.
This case underscores the need for a robust child protection network in North-Central Nigeria. By empowering students, teachers, and community members with the knowledge and tools to prevent, identify, and respond to abuse effectively, we can create a safer environment for children and ensure that justice is served in cases of abuse and neglect.
