This project aims to provide teachers, students, and community members in North-Central Nigeria with the necessary knowledge and tools to prevent and address child abuse. With your support, we can grow a child protection network across the region. This network is crucial for identifying and addressing instances of abuse and neglect, and it also ensures that affected children and families receive the necessary after-care support. In this phase of the project, we plan to assist 50 schools.
The challenge we face is immense, as 60% of Nigerian children endure some form of violence before reaching the age of 18. 1 in 4 girls and 10% of boys in Nigeria have experienced sexual violence. Teachers, social workers, parents, and community members often lack awareness of the signs of physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect, and struggle to respond appropriately when they do recognize such signs. Without intervention, the consequences on a child's well-being and health can be severe.
While awareness of child abuse is growing in Nigeria, awareness alone isn't sufficient to address problem. We must empower students, teachers, and community members to take action by ensuring they have the knowledge and tools needed to prevent, identify, and respond to abuse effectively. By providing training and connecting schools with resources as part of our child protection network, we can secure prompt support for children who suffered abuse and deter future cases.
By establishing a community-based child protection network which can ensure support reaches those who need it most, we are not only impacting the lives of individual children and their families, but also contributing to building a sustainable framework to combat child abuse throughout all of Nigeria. This project will build strategic partnerships among schools, community members, civil society groups, and other stakeholders in order to sustain long-term change.
