Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) - A Math Movement launched by Akshara Foundation and the Karnataka state Government, aims to improve basic Numeracy skills and facilitate classroom learning of Mathematics in Government primary schools of Karnataka. GKA will help over 300,000 children studying in grades 4 and 5 of 7800 Government-run primary schools attain mathematical fluency. It will also build capacity of over 8000 teachers to enable them to teach Maths creatively inside the classrooms.
ASER 2014 shows that in Grade 5, only 18.2% students studying in Government primary schools are able to do basic division putting them behind children in private schools at the same level. Clearly, there is a lot to be done to ensure that as these children grow up and enter the workforce, they are capable of basic numeracy. Ganitha Kalika Andolana is a possible solution that will help improve numeracy skills of over 300,000 4th and 5th graders studying in 7800 government schools in Karnataka.
Ganitha Kalika Andolana includes the following: 1. Equip each school with a Math kit to cover the needs of children in grades 4 & 5 2. Teachers will be trained on the Math pedagogy and the usage of the kit so that they can teach concepts with ease 3. Evaluate the learning outcomes of children through traditional assessment tools and technology-based solutions 4. Work with various stakeholders like parents, elected representatives and local community to create a demand for quality education
This project will build numeracy proficiency of 300,000 children studying in Government-run Primary schools of Karnataka, thus improving their prospects of getting a good job and eventually a better quality of life.
