A little support makes a big difference to the poor kids who have so little. It enables them to stay in school to continue their basic education. It inspires them to work harder and do better. It mkeas them feel less isolated and more confident. It also inspires them to become more caring.
Feng (changed for privacy reason) was born to a very poor family with mom being both mentally and physically disabled, and father at 42 and poor health. I visited her and her family during summer 2009 (I visit some of the poor family every summer), and there were nothing in their house -see photo. I encouraged her to work hard and to go to vocational high school to continue her high school education (she was in 5th grade with below average grade). Her father almost died when she was 6th grade, and she took her father to hospital and took care of him for 2 weeks at age 13. He collected recyclables and sold them to help family during 7-9th grade, and started to work part time during vocational high school summer time. Thanks a lot to her own hard working ethics and our continued support, she got into a level 2 university in 2015. With our support and government loan (and some encouragement by us), she finally decided to go to college. That is a great decision. She flourished in college and won the National Achievement Awards two years in a row. I am confident that she will win it this year again. She has also become a natural leader (from a very shy girl) in college --see photo of her representing interns at a big hotel company meeting.
It does not take much to help a poor student. $80 a year can support an elementary school kid (1st-6th), $100 fo a middle school kid (7th-9th), $200 for a high school student, and $300+ for college student. The money is part of it, the mental boast and encouragement of the little support is anothre important part to these poor kids---they feel loved and they feel that some people care about them, which is a big deal.
