Rimbi Scout Camping Event
Problem:
Drug abuse is a global problem that affects every part of the world. It was once considered primarily an urban problem, but now it has spread to rural communities.
On June 14 th - June 16 th 2024, the Tekeshe Foundation joined forces with the Chipinge District Scouts Commissioner and the scout leaders to host a very successful Scout Camping Event in Rimbi Township. The theme was "Empowering Kids to Say NO to Drugs." The event aimed to educate and equip our young scouts with the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy life choices and resist peer pressure related to drug use. The event saw the participation of over 300 scouts scouts aged 6-16 years, from 11 High schools and Primary Schools along with scout leaders, counselors, and volunteers.
Goals of the Event:
- Education: Provide scouts with factual information about the risks associated with drug use.
- Empowerment: Equip kids with the skills and confidence to say no to drugs.
- Positive Role Models: Introduce scouts to mentors and role models who exemplify the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle.
Event Highlights:
-
Team-Building Exercises: The event kicked off with various team-building exercises designed to foster trust, communication, and collaboration among the scouts. Activities like obstacle courses and group challenges helped the scouts bond and build a supportive community.
-
Marching Through The Township, Horse Riding and Cultural Dance: Scouts marched through the township hoisting banners, they participated in horse riding and also enjoyed cultrual dance by Mbeure Primary school.
-
Workshops and Discussions: Interactive workshops were a key component of the event. Led by the EHT (Environmental Health Technician), experienced counselors and educators, these sessions provided factual information about the dangers of drug use. Topics covered included the effects of drugs on the body and mind, the impact on personal goals, and the importance of saying no.
-
Role-Playing Scenarios: Scouts participated in role-playing scenarios where they practiced refusing drugs and handling peer pressure situations. These exercises were designed to boost their confidence and prepare them for real-life situations. Scouts were encouraged to share their feelings and experiences, creating an open and supportive environment.
-
Campfire Stories: Evenings were spent sharing inspirational stories about individuals who made positive choices in the face of adversity.
Impact and Feedback:
The event was met with enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from both scouts and parents. Many parents gave this event a thumbs up and they reported that their children came home with a deeper understanding of the risks associated with drug use and felt empowered in their ability to say no to drugs.
