Transforming The Livelihoods Of Disadvantaged Rural Women Through Sewing

Thank you so much for the life-changing impact we are making together for disadvantaged rural women in Chipinge. This area where we operate in is located along the Sabi valley which is characterized by recurrent droughts. Sadly after working very hard people usually end up with no crops. It is very common in these rural areas for families to drift into poverty because without any crops they have no other source of income. The goal of this project is to provide an alternate means for the women to earn an income rather than depend solely on subsistence farming. Our approach for accomplishing this goal is to provide the women funds so that they can start income generating projects such as chicken rearing, sewing and gardening.

In keeping with this goal, we launched a sewing project in Manzvire village at the beginning of 2017. Six women participate in the project. The sewing project is doing very well. Thanks to you for your help! Here are the 2017 year end highlights:

We are pleased to announce that the women who participate in the project made 45 uniforms for our scouts. They earned $450 from the sales of the uniforms. The women are ecstatic to earn an income. Out of this money they earned, they used $200 to buy much needed basic item such as food and soap. They will use the remaining $250 to buy sewing materials to make school uniforms.  Here is what two of the women had to say:

In Her Own Words By Sifelani

“I want to thank you so much for helping us! Because of this project our lives have changed dramatically. With the money we earned we bought sugar, flour, salt, soap, dried fish and baking soda. I can’t find the words to adequately express our gratitude to you. Before participating in this project I was known in the community for borrowing. I used to borrow even salt from my neighbors. I don’t have to borrow anything anymore. Instead my neighbors envy me. My family now has enough food to eat!  One more thing, the Tekeshe foundation team members on the ground here in Zimbabwe are very nice to us. We work very well with them and they are very encouraging. Thank you so much!!!”

In Her Own Words By Anna

I also want to thank you for all the help you have given us. You have lifted us up. Before participating in the project we felt like we were in prison but now you have freed us. People used to look down on us but now we are respected members of the community. What makes me very happy is being able to provide for my kids. My kids used to get kicked out of school because I couldn’t afford to pay the school fees. Now, even if I don’t have the money I ask the headmaster for an extension and he knows I will pay the school fees from the money I earn from the sewing project. Also, my kids never go to school hungry anymore; now they have food to eat during the lunch break. You have really changed our lives. Even our health has improved. Before you started helping us we were scrawny because we didn’t have enough food. But now we are healthy and our faces glow. We look good! If you take a close look at the pictures you can see the difference in how we look! In addition I want to thank Mr Dhliwayo, he is a very good instructor. He has taught us lot. You can see the uniforms we made for the scouts in the pictures. Once again thank you so much for lifting us up!

Taking The Project To The Next Level

Mr Dhliwayo (project leader/instructor) and the six women have scheduled a meeting with the Manzvire Primary school headmaster to discuss the possibility of their group being awarded a contract to be the suppliers of the school uniforms. I will give you an update in the next progress report.

As you can see from these pictures and from the testimonials, you are playing a major role in restoring dignity and hope to disadvantaged rural women. May your hearts be filled with joy and laughter this holiday season as you reflect on the impact that your generosity is having on women whose future was bleak!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving holiday. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Thelma
