Dear KIND Friends,
Your support helps us provide education and leadership opportunities to women like Angela* every year. See Angela's story below:
Angela was 17 when she made the difficult decision to travel to the United States in hopes of finding opportunities for herself and her family. Her dream of helping out her family was shattered when she was apprehended by migration enforcement and was obligated to return to Guatemala. Angela struggled upon her initial return. Angela is a very bright young woman who up until that point had only been able to get a sixth grade education. Angela began working as a maid and a nanny when she was 12 years old. Her work was hardly enough to make ends meet and now she faced an overwhelming debt from the trip north. Through GCRRP’s Guatemalan partner Colectivo Vida Digna (CVD) she was able to return to school and begin a new long journey of discovering her capacity as a young woman in Guatemala. Now her second year home, Angela is finishing 8th grade, not an easy feat for a returning young adult student. Angela’s strides and dedication to her development, her family and other youth that have since returned are admirable. Part of showing her that she has the capacity to grow and develop work skills was exposing her to new experiences in which she thrived. In March of 2015 Angela, in conjunction with CVD, co-coordinated a Rutger's Law School delegation in Guatemala on the Structural Causes of Migration. Since then she has gained confidence to learn new things and is currently taking weaving lessons, a skill that will be both practical and creative. Although life is not easy for her and making ends meet is a constant struggle, CVD staff are supporting her through this process. It is incredibly valuable for youth to learn transferrable job skills that allow them to move beyond mere survival to constructing a life free of inequality. GCRRP and our partners work to help young people access the few and far between resources in Guatemala that they need and deserve. With your help we can make this happen for more young people who never thought that this was possible.
*Angela’s name has been changed for her and her family’s protection.
