By Sandra Sanchez | Restoring hearing to 100 children in Panama.
Our 29th Hearing Health Outreach brought specialized hearing care to children and young people from Kuna Nega and nearby schools, with the support of ENT specialists, audiology and speech-language professionals, volunteers, and partner organizations.
With an initial goal of reaching 150 children, we were able to serve 129 children and young people, achieving 86% of our expected attendance. Every child received an initial otoscopic examination and, depending on their age and individual needs, additional evaluations were provided, including audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, ear cleaning, and individual hearing assessments.
The results highlighted two particularly important findings: 32 children, nearly 1 in 4, required ear cleaning or removal of obstructions, while 33 children—25.6% of all those evaluated—were referred for a second phase of care due to findings requiring further assessment.
This means that 1 in every 4 children evaluated showed a sign that should not go without follow-up. This is where the true value of these outreach programs lies: reaching children in time, identifying issues that might otherwise go unnoticed, and supporting them beyond the initial evaluation.
The 33 children who were referred will continue to a second phase of care at Fundación Oír es Vivir, where they will receive additional testing to confirm the findings and determine the appropriate next steps together with our specialists.
For our donors, this impact translates into something very tangible: 129 children reached, 33 opportunities for timely intervention, and 33 families who can now receive answers they did not have before.
