Every year in Fundacion Oir es Vivir (FOV) we have two Hearing Health Tours (Gira Auditiva), where we go out to a rural location or low income communities in the city. We take our whole team to check on +150 children, ages 0-14, otorhinolaryngologists, audiologists, speech therapists and volunteers. During this whole day session, children get their ears checked, wax removed and those that do not pass the hearing tests are remitted to our free clinic in Panama City.
Many children in rural communities in Panama do not have access to regular and routine health and physical exams, including hearing tests. Some cannot pay for exams in private practices and so they end up, being deaf and never going to school. Missing out on educational opportunities from a young age.
Our mobile clinic is complete with doctor, audiologists, speech therapists and volunteers. We are able to wash ear canals in situ, without them leaving their community. We usually set up our mobile clinic in a school where we have access to water and this is where we work for the day.
Being able to bring more children with hearing disabilities into the educational system, and also teaching families that these children can be part of a more inclusive world.
