Belen, San Juan, a rural community in Uraba, Colombia, faces a severe sanitation crisis. Today, 47% of families live without a bathroom, relying on unsafe practices that expose them to disease and environmental contamination. This situation increases health risks, especially for children and older adults. Imagine not having a bathroom at home-they don't have to imagine it; this is their daily reality.
This project addresses unequal access to basic sanitation by providing safe and adequate home solutions for vulnerable families in rural Uraba, Colombia. It will ensure that 21 families receive a complete and safe home system, including proper wastewater management. By eliminating open defecation and strengthening hygiene practices, the project will significantly improve health conditions in the community. The project addresses this challenge through a comprehensive, community-based approach. It will build 21 safe and durable home systems adapted to rural conditions, combined with family training in hygiene, home care, and well-being. Practical workshops on budgeting and income generation will strengthen household stability, while a Community Sanitation Committee will ensure local ownership, proper maintenance, and long-term sustainability.
More than 280 people-primarily children, mothers, and older adults-will experience lasting improvements in health and safety (119 Families, 57 with opportunities). The community will see a sustained reduction in preventable diseases, stronger hygiene habits, and a cleaner, safer living environment. By strengthening local capacity and ownership, this project creates long-term improvements that will benefit families for generations, not just as a one-time intervention.
