The Elder's Food Program continue with the food distribution during weekends to our participants living in San Antonio and nearby areas.  Thanks to the latest contribution received we bought meat, rice, vegetables, beans, cook oil, potatoes, food containers and utensils for the month of December.  The regular menu consist of rice and beans, meat prepared in different ways and vegetables. For the Christmas holidays we prepare our typical menu of rice with green peas, rosted pork or turkey, potato salad and "pastel" which is a dish prepared with mashed platain stuffed with small pieces of meat, potato, sweet red pepper and olives.  During December we will be distributing approximately 600 meals.  In the attached photo you can see the groceries and two of our employees, Xiomara and Edwin, who purchase them and keep the wholesale inventory.

The elderly program provides them a health service at their homes besides the lunch distribution on weekends and holidays.  A nurse evaluate the elders prior to start being a participant to determine their health conditions.  Once he/she joins the program the nurse continue with follow up visits by priority as they are many participants.  Most of them have health conditions:  diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure or skin ulcers.  The nurse refers the participant to a doctor if necessary.  She also share prevention information with the patient and relatives.  This service have been very effective as the participants health had become more stable, and chronic diseases and hospitalizations had decreased.

Project official vehicle
Project official vehicle

Proyecto La Nueva Esperanza has two official vehicles.  One of them had some problems and went to the mechanic.  The shock absorbers and brakes were changed.  This is very important for the security of the drivers, volunteers and participants. Also the vehicle is used to deliver the meals to elders, visit them regarding their health follow up and to update their records.  Other things we do in this vehicle is to buy the food for the pantry and to visit different agencies related to our services which in some cases are not near our office.  We thank the donors for their support.

We are very grateful with the donations received.  With that money we were able to buy food for one (1) day to 50 elders.  The elders had been evaluating our food service and they indicated that the food quality is excellent. Also said they want to continue being part of the program.

Two of our elders had been hospitalized.  Hector returned home but he lives alone and no one was taking care of him.  His condition was fragile and weak.  His face changed when he received and ate his meal which made him feel a little stronger.  The other one, Glenda, was also at the hospital and when she returned home said that she had missed our meals. We are satified that our program has been able to provide meals to our participants thanks to the contribution of the donators.

Attached is a photo of Hector which is now getting better.
