Yafa's Story: Keeping Treatment Alive for Children with Cancer in Palestine

By Giacomo Carlini | International Partnership

Yafa with her Mum
Yafa with her Mum

When Yafa arrived at the Beit Jala Governmental Hospital, 92% of her blood was already invaded by cancer cells. Her chemotherapy was long and extremely difficult, and her mother stayed by her side for almost a year, separated from the rest of the family. Today, Yafa is doing better and is slowly beginning to smile again.

Yet many children in Palestine are still struggling to access the care they desperately need. Movement restrictions, long delays, and the fragility of the healthcare system threaten the continuity of treatment every day. For children with cancer, interruptions in care can have devastating consequences.

This is why Soleterre continues to stand beside young patients and their families at Beit Jala Hospital, the only public hospital in Palestine with a pediatric oncology unit. Alongside medical treatment, children and caregivers receive psychological support, social assistance, and access to safe spaces where they can find comfort and regain a sense of normality during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Behind every diagnosis is a child with dreams, fears, and the desire to grow up. Behind every child is a family facing uncertainty and emotional exhaustion. Supporting them means caring not only for the disease, but for the whole person.

Because when treatment continues, hope survives. And every child deserves the chance to heal, to play, and to dream about the future once again.
