This project aims to provide comprehensive multisectoral support for children with cancer in Palestine, focusing on both mental health and emergency care. It will establish a psychosocial support center, improve healthcare facilities, and offer vital training and psychological support to healthcare professionals. The target population includes children undergoing cancer treatment at the Beit Jala Governmental Hospital, as well as healthcare workers at risk of burnout due to the ongoing conflict.
The ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank has caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Over 14,000 children have died, with many more missing. Healthcare services are mostly destroyed or heavily limited. Pediatric cancer patients are especially at risk, as the conflict and restricted mobility delay access to treatment. Children face long journeys due to checkpoints and road closures. The conflict also worsens the psychological impact on already fragile children and stressed families.
Soleterre will implement a multifaceted approach to support pediatric cancer patients and healthcare workers. This includes: 1) Establishing an MHPSS center for trauma care and psychological support. 2) Renovating a pediatric oncology clinic at Beit Jala Hospital. 3) Offering training for healthcare professionals in collaboration with Policlinico San Matteo in Italy. 4) Providing financial aid to families to ease cancer treatment costs.
This project will significantly impact patients and Palestine's healthcare system by improving access to psychological and medical care for children with cancer, boosting recovery rates and quality of life. It will help healthcare workers reduce burnout and compassion fatigue, allowing for continued high-quality care. The training will build local capacity, enabling professionals to implement advanced protocols and improve future patient outcomes.
