Having a Healthy Summer

Starting the habit of hand-washing young

We hope this finds you well!

The latest addition to our health education programme is a summer camp of fifty children. These kids come from all over the community, and once a week they spend a fun-filled hour learning about how to avoid cholera and stay healthy.

In lessons tailored to their level, the kids learn how to avoid cholera and other water-borne illnesses. The classes are not only educational, but focus on building children’s confidence through art and fun health-related activities.

In combination with our on-going work in orphanages our health education is now reaching more than 150 children and dozens of adults, and none of it would have been possible without your support! We appreciate all you’ve given, and hope that you’ll continue supporting health education in Haiti for those who need it most.

Fighting the Rainy Season

We hope this finds you well?

Thanks to your support, after the cholera outbreak at the Foyer d’Orelph Orphanage, we’ve stepped up our work in health education not only in Foyer d’Orelph but two other orphanages where we work. With the rainy season in full swing, and cholera cases surging again, teaching kids and staff about how germs spread and how to stay healthy has never been so important.

Last week, volunteers taught kids all about what germs are and how to be a “germ buster”. Classes are tailored to the children’s ages, so while older children learned about the immune system and different illnesses, younger kids did fun activities to help them grasp the concept of germs.

These classes for children are backed up by trainings for staff and nurses, where nurses and doctors take the time to teach the adults about these essential issues.

Combined with the records systems provided to each orphanage and our team ensuring that the orphanages have sufficient supplies to keep the kids safe and healthy, we’re working to ensure that not only is the recent cholera outbreak not repeated, but that all the children’s general health will improve as well.

These expanded operations would not have been possible without your support, and we hope you’ll be willing to support on-going health care and education for the more 100 children in our programme by donating or spreading the word about Global Giving’s Matching Day on June 15^th. Cholera Outbreak at Local Orphanage

As the world’s attention turns to new crisis, we were recently reminded that Cholera is still a very real threat by an outbreak at one of our partner orphanages. 11 children at the Foyer d’Orelph were sickened by the water-borne illness and required hospitalisation to recover.

The outbreak was a frightening reminder that Cholera is far from gone in Haiti, but it was also a hopeful illustration that Cholera need not be a deadly disease. Thanks to education provided by EDV and other groups, the orphanage directors were immediately able to identify the signs of Cholera and knew that they must take the children to the hospital.

Their quick action meant that none of the children will suffer any long-term effects from their brush with Cholera, and they were able to recover quickly.

The directors were also ready when emergency supplies like disinfectant and safe water started to arrive. They knew to isolate sick children and start a strict hand washing regiment. With the help of our nurse, they were able to stop the outbreak just four days after it began.

While the situation at Foyer d’Orelph has calmed, it is a sobering reminder that Cholera is not gone, and that without the kind of education that the directors at Foyer d’Orelph received, this disease can still claim lives.

At EDV, we’re working with the Foyer d’Orelph and other vulnerable groups to ensure that during this rainy season, they’re prepared for more Cholera cases. We hope you’ll continue to support our work in Port au Prince – and until May 20th your support will go even further than usual.
