Mental health remains a stigmatized and neglected area in many parts of Nepal. Recognizing this gap, WWF has implemented comprehensive mental health advocacy and support programs. Through these initiatives, we have reached over 1,000 women and girls across various rural communities, providing them with vital resources, counseling, and educational workshops. Even though mental health issues are among Nepal's most pressing issues, this sector currently receives relatively little to no funding.
Mental health has been one of the most pressing concerns and topics of discussion around the world due to its overall impact on an individual's well-being. Nepal adopted a mental health policy in 1997, but it has not been fully implemented. Mental health services remain expensive and urban-centric, leaving thousands of rural residents inaccessible and unaware of them. A decade-long Maoist insurgency (civil war) in Nepal had a long-term impact on mental health issues, particularly among women.
The primary beneficiaries of this project are women suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety and depression as a result of the decade-long civil war during the Maoist insurgency. The long-term effects of a decade-long war, which resulted in the loss of their families and loved ones (more than 13,000 people lost their lives), created lifelong traumas and mental health issues.
