Guns are now the #1 killer of American teens and children. Gun violence disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities across the United States, creating trauma and insecurity among individuals and families. Youth do not feel safe. They suffer from anxiety and depression. There is a critical need for communities to analyze root causes and develop strategies for prevention and healing. We need to help young people develop resilience and hope in the future.
Vision Quilt offers year-round art-based educational programs to schools and community-based organizations to address systemic gun violence. Our FREE toolkit, including incarcerated youth, can be adopted nationwide for ages 12-24. The project develops leadership, social-emotional competencies, and community engagement. Youth-led exhibitions promote dialogue and solutions. Students gain skills in public speaking, community engagement, and advocacy. Art empowers, heals, and inspires action.
Our work is built on partnerships and coalition building to create long-term effects for families and children. Our art and education models built on advocacy are shared nationwide for free to build safe neighborhoods and schools. Since 2016, 91% of participants stated their intention to prevent gun violence within their family, school, or community. Our youth often choose careers as nurses, journalists, and lawyers deciding to return to their hometown to give back to their community.
