Hands That Heal: Training Africa's Health Workers

Before sunrise in northern Zambia, Emmanuel Malama begins another journey.  

With a walking stick in one hand and medical supplies strapped to his back, he steps into a vast wetland that separates him from the families he serves. The water rises nearly to his thighs. Beneath the surface, thick mud pulls at every step. Sometimes he lifts a bicycle onto his shoulder. Sometimes he boards a canoe before continuing on foot. The trip can take hours.  

For Emmanuel, this is simply part of the job.  

As a Community Health Worker trained by Amref Health Africa, he knows that every crossing brings essential health services closer to families who would otherwise go without them.  

Chilubi District is Shaped by Water 

Scattered villages are separated by wetlands, rivers, and seasonal flooding. Reaching a health facility often means walking long distances, navigating swamps, or crossing by canoe. When someone becomes seriously ill, those barriers can turn a treatable condition into a life-threatening emergency.  

For pregnant women, children with severe malaria, and families living in remote fishing communities, access to care depends on someone willing to make the journey. That someone is often Emmanuel.  

Emmanuel's determination is even more remarkable because he makes these journeys with a disability.  

After a severe infection in childhood, one of his legs was amputated. Yet he refused to let that define his future. He completed his Community Health Worker training with distinction and returned home to serve one of Zambia's hardest-to-reach communities.  

Today, he supervises Community Change Agents, educates families about malaria prevention, promotes antenatal care, encourages safe water and sanitation practices, treats minor illnesses, supports disease surveillance, and helps connect patients to higher levels of care when needed.  For Emmanuel, health care begins long before someone reaches a clinic. It begins with information, trust, and showing up. 

Changing Lives, One Household at a Time

The work can be physically demanding, but Emmanuel says what keeps him going is seeing change.

He has watched more mothers attend antenatal appointments earlier in pregnancy. Families are sleeping under mosquito nets more consistently. Children with fever are being brought for treatment sooner. People are learning how to prevent illness before it becomes an emergency.

These are the quiet victories of community-based primary health care.

Instead of waiting for illness to become severe, trained health workers help communities prevent disease, recognize danger signs early, and seek treatment before lives are at risk.

Emmanuel has also witnessed the consequences when help comes too late.

He remembers a young child with severe malaria who needed an urgent blood transfusion. The family began the difficult journey to a referral hospital but never arrived in time.
Experiences like these reinforce why reaching people early matters.

Community health workers cannot eliminate every obstacle created by geography, but they help ensure families receive lifesaving information, timely treatment, and referrals before conditions become critical.

Building Health Systems That Reach Everyone

Across Africa, community health workers form the foundation of primary health care. They connect households with health facilities, provide trusted health education, identify illness early, and help ensure that no community is left behind because of where it is located.

And every crossing reminds us that stronger health systems are built not only in hospitals, but by dedicated health workers who bring care directly to the people who need it most.

For families in Chilubi, Emmanuel is more than a health worker. He is the bridge that brings health care home.
