Meet Winnie
Winnie tells us how HALO helped change her life…
“The time I came in the home I used to be a very bad person. I used to behave in a weird manner. To an extent people couldn’t even tolerate me. Not even my mom could tolerate my character. There were a lot of things she used to say. She would even speak words I would not even expect a parent to say to me. Saying that where would you go if I happen to leave this world. Who would take you on? All that was because I used to behave very bad when I was with her. Connecting me to HALO has really changed me because I’ve been counseled, I’ve been guided and it has made me to change from a bad person I used to be to a better person. The organization has also helped me in the area of education which took me on from primary four to senior 6…. It has also helped to learn how I can connect to people and associate with the people I don’t know. How am I supposed to behave in society? It has been all the work of the organization to make me what I am…. The organization has made me confident. Thank you, HALO for providing me a scholarship and believing in me."

Sharifa gives back after receiving Scholarship

Sharifa grew up in Kampala, Uganda. She was born into difficult circumstances and her family was not able to provide for her. Eventually Sharifa was brought into a HALO home so she could recieve her basic needs, along with the opportunity to attend school. As Sharifa got older, she applied to attend vocational training through the HALO Scholarship Program. She was granted the opportunity to attend vocational training for sewing and design from HALO with the generous support of donors like you. Now that Sharifa has graduated from vocational training, she is giving back to HALO. She is currently volunteering to teach the sewing and design class at the HALO Uganda Learning Center. She is using her knowlege and skill to educate younger HALO youth how to repair clothing, create new designs and build up their own tailoring business. Full circle moments like these are possible because of your support. Thank you!

Meet Alice.

Alice is among the first youth supported by HALO in Uganda beginning over 10 years ago. Alice stood out early on as someone who was incredibly intelligent and dedicated to succeeding in school. She spent a great deal of her time studying and dreamed of becoming an accountant, even though she did not have the means to make this dream a reality.
When Alice was very young, both of her parents died, so her Aunt Margaret took over caring for Alice and her four younger siblings, despite struggling financially and dealing with her own health issues. They lived together in a slum in Kampala, Uganda before becoming connected with HALO. Eventually Alice moved into a HALO home so she would have a safe place to stay and the opportunity to attend school. Even while living in the HALO home, Alice stayed connected to her family and spent time helping the people living in the slum.
She studied hard in school and become one of the best students in her class. Alice earned a scholarship from HALO, along with support from another organization. Alice went on to obtain a degree in Accounting from Makerere University. She recently graduated and we are happy to announce she will begin working as an accountant for HALO in Uganda!
Alice's dreams of graduating from university and becoming an accountant would not be possible without your generous contribution. Thank you for your continued support in helping girls like Alice achieve their dreams.
