HALO provides housing, healing and education to youth in the greatest need. HALO works in communities where there are little to no options for support. The goal of this project is to bring youth out of desperate situations through the power of education. The HALO Scholarship Fund gives orphaned or abandoned Ugandan girls opportunities to pursue their higher education dreams and become contributing members of their communities.
HALO supports communities and youth in the greatest need. Needs differ per community based on issues relating to severe poverty, abuse, neglect and family displacement. In Uganda, 33% of children who start primary school drop out before completing. Only 40% of students are literate at the end of primary school. Most youth believe that attending a university is impossible for them, and 2.4 million children are involved in exploitive work to support their families to survive.
Youth in every place in the world should have the opportunity to make their own career choices. The HALO Scholarship Fund helps youth to focus on their education by taking away their financial hurdles. Awarding youth in Uganda with scholarships to attend university or to gain vocational training gives them the opportunity to make the most of their lives and become contributing members of their communities. This way, the youth have more productive and fulfilling ways to support their families.
HALO has successfully awarded hundreds of youth in Uganda with scholarships and experienced that these youth were driven by the dream to give back to their communities. They showed a special appreciation for the opportunities given and found their passion in pursuing career paths that help others. Their dreams are to become professionals like doctors and engineers. These youth will become role models for other community members and help to alleviate cyclical poverty and lack of education.
