Since our last report in October, we have established 6 new beekeeping demonstration sites in Haiti, which have taught beekeeping to an additional 164 women. With your help, we have trained a total of 284 women beekeepers! We are now operating a total of 14 demonstration sites across Haiti, and 6 more are in development. 72 of our beekeepers have also received micro-loans through Kiva to finance equipment and materials they need to grow their businesses.
“I am very happy to introduce beekeeping to our community. Women are learning a new skill that can later generate revenue for them. The good thing about beekeeping is that it helps improve our environment and helps vulnerable women improve their economic well-being,” says Marie Gemita Augustin, coordinator of the group Organization of Women in Action for the Development of Grand-Goave.
Beekeeping is a wonderful new source of income for women in Haiti, where women are often excluded from the traditional labor markets. As the beekeeping industry grows, there are ripple effects that provide economic opportunities for even more women. For example, Myrlande is a seamstress who was trained through a different Prosperity Catalyst project. Now, she has learned to make beekeeping suits and veils for the beekeepers, expanding her business and accessing a new income stream for her family.
