In Haiti, where natural disasters are all too frequent and the terrain rugged and unforgiving, access to skilled rehabilitation care for children, teens and adults who've suffered from injury or illness is essential to life. You can help Health Volunteers Overseas improve the quality and availability of rehabilitation services for Haitians by supporting the development of the Societe Haitienne de Physiotherapie (SHP), a Haitian-led initiative that seeks to empower physical therapy professionals.
Without access to care, Haitians suffering from illness and injury face nearly insurmountable barriers to mobility. This limits their ability to attend school, find paid work and participate in community life. Access to safe, skilled rehabilitation services is essential to improving the lives of children, families and communities. To meet this need, providers require access to education, training and professional opportunity.
This project will support the Haitian-led national physical therapy association, SHP. Your support will provide resources to strengthen the skills of more than 25 therapists across the country and increase SHP's capacity to lead and advocate for rehabilitation professionals. You can support SHP as they improve access to education and training for Haitian physical therapists, develop professional standards and guidelines, and increase capacity for research.
The challenges facing persons with disabilities and injuries in Haiti are significant, but improving their health outcomes is possible when we invest in physical therapy professionals. Your gift will bring training and support to SHP, building the capacity of Haiti's physical therapy profession. This will increase and improve rehabilitative care for Haitians with injuries or disabilities, helping them to regain their dignity, independence, lives and livelihoods.
