A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday August 14, followed by Tropical Storm Grace just two days later, causing major damage and leaving more than 2,100 dead, over 10,000 injured, and over 75,000 homes and buildings damaged in the country's southwest. IsraAID's Emergency Response Team is delivering urgent aid, focusing on relief distributions, hygiene kits, Personal Protective Equipment, safe water filters, and Psychological First Aid.
This double-emergency has caused over 2,100 deaths, affecting a total of 1.2 million people. After already being displaced from their homes by the earthquake, heavy rain & flooding from Tropical Storm Grace left many people staying in emergency camps yet again looking for somewhere safe to shelter. The people of Haiti are still recovering from the previous earthquake in 2010, when IsraAID first arrived in the country, and have since dealt with 2016's Hurricane Matthew, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
IsraAID has sent an emergency response and assessment team to support the affected population immediately. Urgent support will include distributions of non-food items (NFIs) to ensure that the most vulnerable have access to masks, soap, safe water filters, blankets, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. The IsraAID team includes Israeli emergency coordinators & Haitian former team-members from IsraAID's previous programming, who will be joined by international WASH and Protection experts.
IsraAID's emergency response missions partner with local communities to re-build their lives, their communities and their futures, together. For as long as it takes. We focus on community resilience, building on community strengths in order to reduce the risk of future disasters.
