As hurricane Matthew ripped through Haiti yesterday we could only watch and pray from afar.

Once all our friends, colleagues and associates had checked in with us through email, facebook and messaging, we breathed a little easy.

Now the tough part begins. Rebuilding once again. Reconnecting once again. Rejuvenating once agian. Rejoicing once again. That is the thing about working with the people of Haiti, they are a resilient people.They always rebound from whatever disaster, calamity or catastrophe that comes at them.

They have deep faith rooted in a knowledge that things will some day get better. Things will improve. Things will change.

That is one of the reasons that HEAR exists. To make the dream of improving the status quo for the populace. THat is why we bring young Haitians to the US to study and give them the tools to have an impact on Haiti when they return.

That is why your donations are important to our operation. It is only through your generosity that we can fill the gap between the students' tuition scholarship and their living expenses while they are studying.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers for the people of Haiti and for our students.

Here is Marie's story in her own words. Your donation will allow her to fulfill her dream. Thank you.

I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in a family of 5. I did preschool at Soeur Ste Marie des Anges. Then, from 1992 to 1996, I attended Célie-Lilavois for my primary education. In 1996, I moved to La Plaine where I did my secondary education. My 7th and 8th grade, I did them respectively at Jean-Luckner Millien School and Jacques 1er. Then, from 1999 to 2004, I attended Louverture Cleary School.

I would do Summer job from 2002 to 2004 in order to respond to my economic needs as my father passed away in 96 and my mother got very sick from 2002 to 2004. Fortunately, after graduating from high school in 2004, I was hired as Assistant of the Dean of student at my former school and also Teacher of English and Spanish. This has contributed a lot to my attendance at university and to my future positions at other institutions. So, from 2004 to 2008, I studied Education/Modern Languages for Secondary education at Quisqueya.

I continued working at Louverture Cleary School/The Haitian Project until 2011. From 2009 to 2011, I worked at Catts Pressoir as teacher of English and Spanish. I also worked at l’Excellence for a year in 2010. From 2009 until today, I am a teacher at The Haitian American Institute.

I am also an active teacher trainer for an affiliate of TESOL international in Haiti, Miragoane Association of Teachers of English (MATE) since 2009. I organize conferences and seminars for teachers of English.

I have participated in several professional development programs for educators in Haiti and aboard. In 2012, I was selected to participate in a 6 weeks professional development program organized by the US Department of States and IREX called Teaching Excellence and Achievement program (TEA).

Until today, I continue working in the education sector both as a teacher and also as a Program Assistant in education at UNESCO. There, I work since 2011 in collaboration with other colleagues in support to the Ministry of education goals in Haiti.

It isn’t without difficulties that I am going my way. Economic situation, the country lack organization of services and political instability have had great impact on me. But I thank God daily for the strength in gave me, the trust of others in me and their invaluable supports.

There are still many challenges in Haiti that should be overcome and this can only be done through an education of quality at all levels. Consequently, lifelong learning is important not only to better my life but also the life of others.
